Zofran – Emerging Litigation

Zofran is used to prevent nausea and vomiting that may be caused by chemotherapy or radiation in treating cancer. It also has been used off-label by pregnant women to treat morning sickness often leading to birth defects in babies including cleft palate, cleft lip and congenital heart defects.

Case Evaluation Criteria:

  1. Whether the patient was prescribed Zofran? Reason for prescription? (To prevent nausea and vomiting caused by surgery and medicines or off-label use – Pregnancy)
  2. Did the patient have any preexisting conditions, allergies or contraindications for Zofran? (eg Congenital long QT syndrome)
  3. Dosage and Intake details including duration of Zofran use (to be included under pharmacy log)
