Mismanaged Post-partum Hemorrhage Causes Death
$5.1 Million Verdict

A 15-year-old Hispanic-American mother died secondary to post-partum hemorrhage and Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). The defendants claimed an untreatable amniotic fluid embolism caused the mother's death. With the testimony of a medQuest OB/GYN, the plaintiff proved that following the birth the mother's bleeding and uterine atony triggered the onset of ARDS. Furthermore, the defendants negligently mismanaged these complications and failed to obtain a consult with an intensivist. The infant was the decedent's only survivor. There was no wage loss; the jury's award of $5.1 million was based solely on non-economic damages.
