Transplantation, Renal Transplant
Ref. # 17038

A 41 year old non-diabetic Michigan man underwent a renal transplant for end stage renal disease. His post-op course was complicated by right thigh numbness. A work-up with EMG was concurrent with diffuse polyneuropathy and recent neurogenic process affecting muscles innervated by right L3-L4 spinal nerve roots. A medQuest renal transplant specialist reported negligent damage to a femoral nerve ( which runs by the external iliac artery and vein) due to either inappropriate icing or retractor injury. The patient awoke with this extraordinary complication, yet operative notes were minimal. It was below standard of care for this complication to occur.
