Child Psychiatry, Gastroenterology, Psychiatry
Ref. # 17738

A 16 year old West Virginia boy consulted a psychiatrist for Attention Deficit Disorder. One year later, Cylert was prescribed. Fifteen months later, the antidepressant Wellbutrin was added to the Cylert treatment. Three weeks later the boy jaundiced and one month after that underwent a liver transplant. The diagnosis was cryptogenic cirrhosis. In questioning whether the psychiatric drugs caused the cirrhosis, the attorney noted the boy had a negative Hepatitis A&B titer and was negative for Wilson's Disease and alcohol use. A medQuest child psychiatrist reported that liver function studies are required before initiating Cylert, Wellbutrin, Ritalin, etc. but they were not performed. Further negligence occurred when the boy complained of a rash and the treating psychiatrist failed to immediately discontinue the medications and perform liver testing. A medQuest gastroenterologist reported that Cylert is known to cause abnormal liver function and added that the failure to perform liver function testing constituted negligence.
