A Mississippi woman complained to her OB/GYN of a lump in her left breast. A sonogram revealed a .8 mm structure which was diagnosed as simply a cyst. The patient was told to return if she felt it grow or if she experienced pain. Accordingly, the woman returned 1 1/2 years later. The OB/GYN unsuccessfully attempted aspiration and referred the woman to a breast surgeon, who performed a radical mastectomy for breast cancer. A medQuest OB/GYN reported a mammogram was initially required, with follow-up in one month for possible referral to a surgeon. A medQuest oncologist reported that timely diagnosis and treatment would have improved the outcome.
