Ref. # 345501
A 15-year-old boy was seen by a dermatologist for acute facial acne. Treatment consisted of Accutane for five months, at the end of which the acne was clearing up. Three months later the boy encouraged his father to take him to visit the dermatologist because of a recurrence. On this exam the physician prescribed Bactrim DS. For more than eight months the boy was on Bactrim DS until he was admitted to a hospital. He was diagnosed with aplastic anemia. His platelet count had fallen from 204 to 7. For ten months the boy struggled, underwent a remedial stem cell transplant, and ultimately expired from complications. A medQuest dermatologist/dermatopathologist reported the Bactrim DS caused the aplastic anemia which killed the boy. The dermatologist failed to perform the routine labwork recommended by the drug manufacturer, including blood or urine analysis. The boy's death was preventable.
